Autumn Foliage – 2016 (Redux)

This year’s foliage season has been quite spectacular.

Last Thursday, we headed to camp to take the sailboat out of the water. While Joan scrubbed the summer’s accumulation off the bottom of the hull, I headed out in the kayak to photograph the lake shore. The first three photos are the result.

On Saturday, I headed out for a short drive. On the outbound leg, I headed up towards Hillsborough Center and then on to East Washington. I headed back towards home via Washington and Route 31. The Pierce Homestead is near the junction of Routes 31 and 9 in Hillsborough.

On Saturday, I photographed down by the bridge on Gregg Lake three times. The skies were cloudless, bright blue when I passed by in the morning. In the early afternoon there were scattered clouds and by late afternoon the skies were mostly cloudy. The early afternoon skies made for the most interesting photos; the last thee above and the four below.

Foliage Season – 2016

The autumn foliage is about peak here in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire.

Friday dawned crisp and clear. I spent a bit of time making some folilage photographs on my way back from running errands in Peterborough.

Saturday dawned cloudy and a bit warmer. Joan and I spent the morning and early afternoon doing the Wool Arts Tour.  In the late afternoon, while Joan visited the Monadnock Quilters Guild show, I spent an hour taking a walk at the Edward McDowell Lake in Peterborough. The rain held off until I was almost back to the car,

A Short Road Trip in Vermont

Yesterday (Sunday, 18 Sep) I had engagements in Brattleboro mid-morning and mid-afternoon. I filled the interval between engagements by taking a short drive to photograph.

Heading north from Brattleboro on Route 5, I stopped in Bellows Falls for lunch.

After lunch, I headed west on Route 121 towards Grafton. In Grafton I turned south towards Townshend; there Route 30 took me back to Brattleboro via Newfane and Dummerstown.

The ride was scenic and covered territory that was mostly new to me. I stopped three or four times to make photographs.

More Barn Board and another Window

I headed out in late this afternoon in search of more barn board to photograph. The mission was a success! Pretty soon, I’ll have enough material to edit a finished project from.

I also found another window to photograph.

I have been looking back though my archives and may also have enough material for a series of photographs of windows… tentatively titled “Outside, Looking In”.

Late Evening Sky

On Tuesday, as I was taking in the bird feeders*, I noticed the almost full moon peaking through the just leafing out oak tree in the front yard. Of course, I went a got my camera.

The moon was only visible for short intervals as it was quite cloudy. Thus, after photographing the moon though the branches, I turned my attention (and lens) to the clouds themselves.

All of these photos were taken about twenty minutes after the sun had set.

* The bird feeders are stowed away in the garage every night in order to not attract the neighborhood bears.

Margins

Last Tuesday dawned cold and clear. However, by mid-afternoon the temperature was near 40oF and there was a thin, high overcast to soften the light.

Thus, camera in hand, I headed out for a walk around the edge of the lake. Because the sky was uninteresting, I concentrated on the intimate landscape.

Autumnal Abstracts 2015 — Redux

About two weeks ago, I made my first batch of Autumnal Abstracts for the 2015 season.

Since then, I have ventured out on a few more excursions in search of the ‘proper’ scenes from which to extract more abstractions.

All but the last photograph made using a long exposure (in the range of 6-12 seconds) and deliberate movement of the camera. The only ‘photoshopping’ done to these photos is the processing typically applied to raw files from the camera (i.e. levels adjustment, contrast, etc.).

Many of these are much more abstract than the previous photographs in this series, in that they do not really have any trace of their origin remaining. I would be interested in hearing folks reaction to these photographs.

First Snow

All of a sudden it is seemingly winter!

The foliage is definitely past peak and Saturday night we got about an inch of snow. Sunday dawned cold (the high for the day was 39 oF) and sunny. The sun made quick work of most of the snow. By the time we (Joan, her friend Sally, and I) headed out to hike the Bailey Brook loop in the early afternoon it was mostly gone.

However, during the couple of hours we were out, the clouds moved in and we experienced three or four periods of snow showers and flurries. The combination of colorful leaves on the ground and traces of fresh snow made for some interesting photography.

A Long Weekend at Star Island

Last Friday afternoon we boarded the M/V Thomas Leighton and headed to Star Island for a birding weekend organized by Eric Masterson. This trip is timed to be able to see southward migrating birds, especially warblers*. We arrived back on the mainland about 3:30 PM on Sunday.

Saturday dawned blustery and although there were birds present, they were pretty much hunkered down inside the brush and therefore impossible to photograph. The wind died down on Saturday evening and Sunday was much calmer and the photography more productive.

I discovered that (compared to the spring time) photography was much more difficult since most of the plants which were bare in the spring were still more-or-less fully leafed out. Thus getting clear views of small birds was difficult.

The most common warbler we saw, by far, was the yellow-rumped. In addition we observed two rarities for New Hampshire… a lark sparrow and a lazuli bunting; both are western birds. The bunting is the first sighting of this species in NH (if it is accepted by the Rare Bird Committee).

Another difference between our spring trip and this one, was the number of people. The spring trip occurred before the official opening of the season so the only people on the island were the maintenance staff and a couple of dozen birders. This past weekend us birders shared the island with at least three other groups… the Star Island board of directors, sailors participating in the Gosport Regatta and a group of kite fliers.

I took time away from birding on Saturday afternoon to photograph the sailboats as they neared Star Island (both the windward mark and the finish line were close by).

Abstracts and Cattails

Yesterday found Joan and I in our kayaks on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale, NH. Joan was hunting rare plants and I photographs.

The weather was partly sunny and as long as the sun covered, not too hot. The thermometer in the car read 92 oF as we headed home in the mid-afternoon.

The abstracts are a collaboration.

For the first four photographs, a long gone graffiti artist applied paint to a concrete bridge abutment. Weather and time did their job. I framed and “captured” the final work.

My collaborator in the final work was mother nature. She provided an iron oxide stain on a rock just at the waters edge.

Joan’s survey site was near a number of large beds of cattails along the riverbank,  I had an enjoyable time trying to find interesting photographs where plant emerges from water. (Being low to the water in a kayak enforces a certain viewpoint.)

I also looked for photographs along other parts of the riverbank, but was only satisfied with one.
