2017 Road Trip — River Bottom Homestead

Within the CW Russell NWR, a short but muddy walk from the road, lies the remains of an old Missouri River homestead.

Two generations of log cabin are present… an older wood chinked structure and a newer cement chinked structure. The older structure once had a sod roof. The newer structure was used recently enough that it once had electricity.

There are also the remains of a number of outbuildings (barns and sheds) as well as remnants of fences and corrals.

When in Yellowstone one must make photographs of the geothermal features. Here are mine!

The microbial mats around the geothermal features are a source of constant fascination to this retired biochemist.

TAC polymerase which makes the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) possible was isolated from Thermus aquaticus, a bacterium that lives in hot springs.  Possibly, this fact is the source of my interest in these mats.

We also spent a very cloudy drab afternoon in Grand Teton NP. The afternoon included a stop at the overlook where Ansel Adams’ well know photograph titled “The Tetons – Snake River” was made; the view has changed much since 1941-1942.

Stonewall Farm

Yesterday afternoon I spent some time at the Stonewall Farm an agricultural education center (among other things) in Keene, NH. I took a walk on their extensive trail network, but I found many things to photograph right near their buildings.

After leaving the farm, I meandered toward Brattleborough and discovered a new (to me) meetinghouse, the Park Hill Meetinghouse in Westmoreland, NH. I’ll certainly be heading back here in the light of November and hunting for the ‘perfect’ sky.

In the Neighborhood of the VCP

Thursday evening I found myself in Brattleboro with some time on my hands.

The only camera I had with me was my digitally “enhanced” camera obscura. Thus, this is what I used to make photographs; all were made within a couple of  hundred feet of the Vermont Center for Photography’s front door. (The last two photos were conceived as a diptych.)

Found ‘Film’

Remember the days of yore film?

Every once in awhile you would develop a roll of film and find exposures that you had forgotten that you had made!

In these days of instant gratification digital photography, this doesn’t happen nearly as often, but I had this “forgotten film” experience recently.

The photos below were made (using my camera obscura system) on 23 May, the day before my cardiac ‘event’. They lay forgotten until this morning.

I used the camera obscura to make some photos on Thursday evening. When I went to download those photos this morning, I discovered about two dozen frames that I exposed back in May.

Star Island – May 2017

I spent this past Friday and Saturday on Star Island, one of the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. The trip (which is organized by Eric Masterson) was timed to coincide with the spring migration of birds.

Joan and I went on this trip back in 2014 (see this post for birds and this one for landscapes); this year I went by myself as Joan was occupied with editing the June issue of the Antrim Limrik.

The birding was not as spectacular this year as it was in 2014 but I had a good time anyway. One can always find something to photograph if you spend time looking carefully.

Recent Meanders/Photos

On Monday, I meandered home from Peterborough via Temple, Wilton, Lyndeborough and Francestown… I know, it was not exactly the direct route!

On Tuesday I meandered through the western White Mountains… Kinsman Notch and Franconia Notch.

On Wednesday, I had an errand to attend to in Warner… I meandered back home stopping in Bradford Center to make some photographs using my camera obscura.

A Short Walk

Woke up this morning to 4 deg. F and a stiff wind blowing. The temperature finally made it to double digest by noon.

I’ll have to head outside eventually… we need a resupply of wood

Yesterday was not so extreme weather wise. We had flurries most of the day but it was in the high 20s F.

By mid afternoon cabin fever kicked in and the dusting of new snow looked tempting.

I headed out, camera in hand, for a short walk around the neighborhood.

Thursday Meander

Thursday evening was the first session of the new Photo Salon at the VCP. I left in the early afternoon so that I would have plenty of time to meander and still get to Brattleboro by six.

My route took me through Troy, NH then down through Hinsdale and into Northfield, MA. I crossed the Connecticut River in Northfield and headed back north on route 142 into Brattleboro.

Despite the heavy overcast (and dull light) I added to my collection of “building tops” in both Troy and Hinsdale. I resisted the urge to add more as I passed through Northfield.

One has to have limits and thus far the building tops series is pure NH; I have also resisted the urge in Vermont!

Derelict trucks are another issue. I’ll photograph them where ever I find them.

These three and the “steam” shovel were sitting at the edge of a field along route 142 in Northfield (or possibly Gill).

Early Morning Light

On Friday morning I had coffee and talked photography with my friend Jeff.

I headed out early enough so that I had time to stop and make some photographs on the drive to Peterborough.
