{"id":21,"date":"2010-05-28T09:45:47","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T13:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gorga.org\/blog\/?p=21"},"modified":"2010-05-28T09:45:47","modified_gmt":"2010-05-28T13:45:47","slug":"early-odonates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gorga.org\/blog\/?p=21","title":{"rendered":"Early Odonates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my photographic passions (manias, according to Joan) are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.odonatacentral.org\/index.php\/PageAction.get\/name\/HomePage\" target=\"_blank\">odontates <\/a>(that is, dragonflies and damselflies)\u2026 you\u2019ll see a lot of them if you follow this blog.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-May is the beginning of odontate season in New England. So, I spent a bit of time over the past two days \u201chunting\u201d dragonflies.\u00a0 In addition to just getting outside and enjoying the spring, I wanted to test my new \u201codontate rig\u201d which allows me to use my flash as I photograph these elusive creatures. Most of these photos were taken at Carver\u2019s Pond (in Bridgewater, MA) but the first one was taken in the backyard.<\/p>\n<p>This is an immature male common whitetail:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 60px;\"><code>[singlepic id=11 w=300 h= mode= float=]<\/code><\/p>\n<p>A male bluet (probably an Atlantic Bluet)\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><code>[singlepic id=12 w=300 h= mode= float=]<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and a female bluet (I\u2019m unsure of the exact species)\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><code>[singlepic id=13 w=300 h= mode= float=]<\/code><\/p>\n<p>As adult odontates are short lived, mating season begins quickly after the adults emerge from the larva as these fragile forktails show\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><code>[singlepic id=15 w=300 h= mode= float=]<\/code><\/p>\n<p>As one wanders the woods hunting one group of animals, you often observe many other organisms doing their thing as this last photo shows\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><code>[singlepic id=14 w=300 h= mode= float=]<\/code><\/p>\n<p>I think that these butterflies are mating, but I know even less about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lepidoptera\" target=\"_blank\">Lepidoptera <\/a>than I do about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odonata\" target=\"_blank\">Odonata<\/a>!
